Tuesday, April 2, 2001 a new scoreboard was dedicated at the Bell High School Baseball field. The scoreboard bears the name of Nathan F. Danford, the baseball legend after whom the field was named almost 33 years ago. Below is a portion of an article from January, 1974 that relates the legacy of Nathan F. Danford. BASEBALL COACH REMEMBERED BY ALL In the summer of 1973, a man well-known in that part of Texas died after having open hart surgery. His name was Nate Danford. For the past 13 years, Nate has been coaching baseball for kids. He coached the American Legion team this past summer, and had been an officer in the local association. Most of his charges were in the 13 to 18 year old age bracket, but Nate had many admirees among those kids parents, too. Lots of boys furthered their education on athletic scholarships acquired with the assistance of Nate Danford. His outstanding work with area youngsters meet the challenges of the modern world. Along with sports, Nate taught honesty, integrity, and self-confidence. Things you don't get from a book. When the new Bell High School was being built, Nate pitched in and helped build the baseball diamond. Then he worked through the summer with the school baseball coach and many others, to make it a fine playing field. You don't forget a man like Nate. And Betty is justifiably proud of him. Members of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school board haven't forgotten Nate, either. At the first board meeting of the new year, held January 8, 1974 they elected to name the Bell High diamond after him. Now and forever, it will be known as the "Nathan F. Danford Baseball Field." |
